
This
epic drama's roots go tar back into the past days where everything was different
from the present day life. It probably evolved through a physical depletion
of revered tables for a pre-literate people and took. But today, no doubt that
Kathakali is a highly stylized but an extraordinarily evocative art which combines
chant, drama, dance, make-lip, and gesture into a package that spins a compelling
spell.
It is not just Kthakali that is the main dance form of Kerala,It has a rich
repertoire of folk dances. They in turn show the various forms and moods of
the local folks residing in this cultural state.There are certain dances that
women perform on a solo basis but nevertheless Ttere are also dances in which
men and women perform together.
There are more than fifty well-known folk dances in Kerela. Of them the Kaliyattom,
Mudiyettu, Kolam Thullal,Padayani, Kolkali, Parichamuttukali, Thappukali, Kuravarkali,
and Thiruvathirakali are the most popular. Some of them are:
Chavittunatakom
A sensual blend of wide-ranging cultures is tangible in Chavittunatakam.
Literally means 'Stamping Drama', its history begins with advent of the Portuguese
to the Malabar coast of Kerala.
Kathakali
Kerala owes its transnational fame to this nearly 300 years old classical
dance form which combines facets of ballet, opera, masque and the pantomime.
Krishnanattom
A spectacle for both the scholar and the simple rustic. The visual
effect is enhanced by varied and colourful facial make-up with larger-than-life-masks,
made of light wood and cloth padding, for

certain
characters.
Koothu
Nangiar Koothu is an art performed by the Nangiars or the female
members of the Chakkiar
community. This is a solo dance drama mainly
centred on the legends of Krishna.
Kootiyattam
Kootiyattam is a dance traditionally enacted in temples. Kootiyattam
is Kathakali's 2000 year old predecessor and is offered as a votive offering
to the deity.
Thiruathirakkali

It
is a dance performed by women for the everlasting marital bliss, on Thiruvathira
day in the
Malayalam month of Dhanu (December-January). It is a part
of the old custom followed in nair joint families.
Mohiniyattom
Mohiniyattom, expressing worship, has a tradition, soft and graceful,
running down centuries. Its history goes to those days man began worshipping
supernatural powers.
Velakali
Velakali is a spectacular martial dance performed in a few temples
of Southern Kerala by Nair warriors holding wooden swords and shields.
